Drink M for Murder – A Winery Murder Mystery Adventure

Renowned wine critic Bartholomew “Bart” Monroe was found dead at Veraison Estate. What was meant to be a celebration of Hawke’s Bay’s finest vintages uncorked a scandal that had been bubbling beneath the surface for years.

Now it’s your turn to investigate.

Saddle up and follow Bart’s last movements through the vineyards of Hawke’s Bay — visiting cellar doors, solving puzzles, and piecing together clues hidden across either the Bridge Pa Triangle or Gimblett Gravels wine districts. Drink M for Murder is a self-guided outdoor murder mystery with a full-bodied twist — part cycling adventure, part logic puzzle, and entirely unforgettable.

In the world of wine… not everything ages well.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This is an immersive murder mystery logic puzzle set against the rolling vineyards of Hawke’s Bay. Follow Bart Monroe’s last movements by bike, visiting cellar doors and solving multiple choice puzzles that reveal something new about the murder with every answer.

Each clue you uncover brings you closer to the truth — who killed Bart, with what, where, and why. You’ll need logic, curiosity, and good teamwork to piece it all together before the trail goes cold.

No special wine knowledge needed — though taking time to taste the wines along the way is, naturally, encouraged.

You’ll be guided step-by-step via your phone, using QR codes and cryptic clues at each winery stop across either the Bridge Pa Triangle or Gimblett Gravels wine districts.

Our Murder Mystery unfolds across four stunning local wineries. While these are our host partners, wine tasting is entirely optional. You’re welcome to roll up, find your clues, and soak in the views before hopping back on your bike for the next leg of the adventure.

ROUTE AND DURATION

Choose your crime scene — the sun-drenched Gimblett Gravels or the rolling Bridge Pa Triangle wine districts. Both routes cover around 12–15 km of easy, mostly flat cycling through some of Hawke’s Bay’s most stunning wine country.

Along the way you’ll make 4 winery stops, each with puzzles to solve and clues to uncover — not to mention some of the region’s finest wines to taste.

Allow 3–5 hours in total, including tastings and a lunch break. It’s not a race — though the killer isn’t going to wait forever.

Start Times: Choose either 11 AM or 12 PM. All bikes are due back by 5 PM.

FAQs

How long does the murder mystery take?

Most teams crack the case in around 3–5 hours, depending on how long you linger at the cellar doors — and how many glasses you stop to enjoy along the way.

Can we do the murder mystery if we don’t drink wine?

Absolutely. The mystery is just as compelling without a glass in hand — and Hawke’s Bay’s scenery alone is worth the ride.

Do I have to buy wine to play?

Nope! The mystery is solved using clues found at each location. Whether you want to indulge in a full tasting flight, grab a coffee, or just hunt for the next clue and head off—it’s entirely up to you.

Is there an entry fee?

There is no entry fee to visit our partner wineries to play the game. You only pay the winery if you choose to purchase food or drinks.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes — bookings are essential so we can prepare your clues, coordinate your winery stops, and have everything ready for your investigation.

Do we need to be fit or experienced cyclists?

Not at all, but it does help to know how to ride a bike. Both routes are mostly flat and easy going — perfect for a relaxed day out. Choose a regular bike or e-bike and investigate at your own pace.

What should we bring?

Comfortable clothes, sunscreen, a water bottle, and a raincoat if the skies look doubtful. Oh — and a sharp mind. You’ll need it.
