General Questions

Whats the largest group size you can take?

We have 40 regular bikes of various sizes (5 small, 10 small to medium, 10 medium, 11 large and 4 extra large. 3 tandems and 15 electric bikes (3 small, 9 medium, and 3 extra large). We can take groups of most sizes.

Do I need to book the wineries?

The short answer is – Yes!

It is only polite to let the venue know that you will be coming with a group of people. The long answer is – depends.

For small groups of 2-6 people.

Generally speaking you can probably visit most wineries without a booking and be able to do a wine tasting. For a weekend, they do tend to get busier with lots of people visiting, so bookings will be advisable particularly if you are around six people. During a week day it is a lot more relaxed.

For groups of 7 – 16 people.

The answer would most assuredely be yes, you have to book ahead. Wine tasting no longer means standing around a bar, you sit down and do a tutored tasting – where a cellar door person will take you through the wines that are on offer.

For groups of 16 or more people.

You will definately have to book ahead and this will mean at least a week, not last minute. A couple of wineries no longer take groups above 16-18 people. They do not have the space or staff to manage that.

Are the wineries open over Xmas?

Generally speaking, all wineries in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels region will be open 7 days between 27th and 31st December.

Christmas Eve – half day closing for many (those that are generally open on a wednesday.

Christmas Day – all are closed (its the law).

Boxing Day – 90% are still closed, maybe one opens.

27th – 31st December all are open.

New Year’s Day – all are closed.

2nd January (public holiday) – all are open.

3rd – 4th January all are open during this period.

5th January onwards – we might have a few open on Monday and Tuesday but refer to our chart on the front page for more information

Before the event

Do I need to make a reservation?

For weekends, yes! At least 24 hours in advance and subject to availability. For larger groups you may have to book a few weeks in advance.

Most of the time during the week you can turn up and we will have bikes available.

We will always try to accommodate where we can, but don’t be surprised if you turn up without a booking and we have no bikes available.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes. Please see our cancellations and refunds page for full details.

Do you have a group discount?

Our prices are competitively priced for the service we offer, it takes as much effort to run a large group as a small group. So, at this stage we are not offering discounts for large groups.

Can I bring my own bike?

We would prefer that you do not. We are a bike hire company, so we would obviously recommend you to use our bikes.

If you do bring your own bike, please make sure it is roadworthy. If you would like us to pump up the tyres we will charge $10. If you come with a flat tyre, we may change it for $25-$45 depending. Other fixes/repairs are charged out at $75 per hour (minimum charge – 1 hour).

Do you have child seats?
Yes, we have one child seat for infants from 11 months old – they need to be sitting up independantly to use this. We do not have anything for younger infants. These will work for children upto 15Kg in weight.
Do you have bikes for children?
Yes, we have one child trailer for 2-7 yr olds, and one bike for 7-9 year olds, and one for 9-11 year olds. Older children generally fit onto our range of small to medium framed bikes.  Adult bikes are suitable for children over the age of 14 years.

Getting there

How can I get to you?
Most of our customers drive to us and are responsible in using a desingated driver for the trip home.

You can use Hastings Taxi. Approximate prices for 2-10 people are from $50-$55 per shuttle (one-way) from Hastings, $55-$60 per shuttle (one-way) from Havelock North Village and from $90-$110 per shuttle (one-way) from Napier CBD or $100 per shuttle (one-way) from Ahuriri/Westshore.  Please call the taxi companies directly for a quote and to book a time.

We do not provide transport.

Can you come and pick me up?
Unfortunately we do not have the facilites to transport bikes and people around Hawke’s Bay, there are a few other companies that do.

You’ll also find these companies charge an extra $50 per person to do so. We beleice that once you have gathered four or more people it would be cheaper to organise your own transport through a taxi service with a maxicab.

On the day

What is the best time to start?

Best time to arrive is about 10am  to 10.30am we can get you on your way fairly quickly. You then have until 5pm to return the bikes.

How long will it take?
From our shop in Clive we have short 2-hour rides and 4-hour rides for peope who wish to take only a few hours.

For winery tours, we would recommend that you make it a whole day activity. Depending on the number of wineries you visit and time spent at each winery, we estimate you will spend at least one hour per winery you visit – and time gets away from you!

How many wineries can we visit?
This very much depends which day you come on and we cannot guarantee that you will get to all of them. We publish a chart on each of the tour pages of current wineries that are open.
Do I have to make reservations for wine tastings?

This very much depends on your group size. If you are a couple out for a day’s wine tasting, then you can most likey turn up without a reservation depending on how busy the winery is. But if you are turning up with six people or more then it would be essential to make a booking.

Do I pay tasting fees at wineries?
All wineries charge tasting fees of between $10 – $15 per person. At some wineries tasting fees can be waived against any wine purchased.

If your group is larger than 10 people then tasting fees may be  non-refundable.

Am I riding on the roads?
Not unless you want to. Since the addition of the Wineries Cycle Track you follow the lime tracks on the side of the road. It is one of the safest places to ride and very bike friendly. There is only one section where clients are on the road for 400m.

We have a shop in Clive that covers the coast and Havelock North.
