A Terroir Lettered in Gravel
Paritua Winery & Vineyard sits proudly in the Bridge Pa Triangle, Hastings, in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. It’s a 53-hectare estate with gravely soils and gentle contours, surrounded by hills, benefiting from long, warm summers and crisp winters. Paritua Winery is family-friendly and accessible by appointment during the off-hours. It offers not just wines but a connection to landscape, architecture, and story. Their wine club, known as “The Stream”, gives members early access to new releases and invites for private tastings.
Paritua’s cellar door is sophisticated and welcoming. Tastings are available Wednesday through Sunday (midday to late afternoon) with service fees that may be refunded with purchase under certain conditions. Booking is required for larger groups.
A Sense of Place: Soils, Stream & Story
The name “Paritua” refers to the Paritua Stream which meanders through the vineyard. In Māori, Paritua means “the meandering stream above the ancient river.”
More than poetic imagery, this is rootedness: the vineyard is planted over the historical riverbed of the Ngaruroro River, a river that altered course following the great 1860s earthquake. The alluvial gravels, well‐draining soils, plus the microclimate of Bridge Pa, make this location ideal for high‐quality grapes.
From 2003, Paritua Winery planted its vines in three phases. Around 70% of plantings are red varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec—with the rest Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
Winemaking Philosophy & Organic Certification
Paritua is committed to expressing terroir while maintaining high standards of sustainability. The vineyard is 100% certified organic and all wines from 2022 onwards are organic and vegan friendly.
Chief Winemaker Jason Stent oversees production. A Hawke’s Bay native, Stent’s winemaking path includes study in France, hands on experience at Sacred Hill Wines, and strong focus on respecting the soil and the varietal character in each wine.
Facilities are modern and well designed, including a fully temperature-controlled barrel room, an optical sorter to ensure only top quality fruit is used, frost protection via overhead sprinkler system, and thoughtfully designed architecture to blend with the landscape.
Wine Ranges: Stone Paddock, Paritua & Flagship 21.12
Paritua offers several tiers of wine:
- Stone Paddock Range – signature regional varietals. These are made every year. Think Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, rosé. These wines express varietal character with purity and are crafted from estate vines.
- Paritua Range – vintage expression wines only produced in outstanding years. These are low‐yield, hand-harvested grapes, from selected blocks, with extra care in both vineyard and winery. Varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, etc.
- 21.12 – the flagship wine: a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend (with Cabernet Franc and Merlot) only made in the very best vintages. It aims at standing alongside top New Zealand Bordeaux-style blends.
Availability is international (NZ, USA, UK, Denmark, China) as well as direct via Paritua’s online store.
