Frequently Asked Questions with On Yer Bike Winery Tours

If you have questions about our bike winery tours, look through the questions here before emailing us.

General Questions

Whats the largest group size you can take?

We have 30 regular bikes of various sizes (5 small, 10 small to medium, 11 large and 4 extra large), 3 tandems and 13 electric bikes (3 small, 5 medium, 2 large, and 3 extra large).

Practically, we would probably limit groups to 20 people due more to some wineries booking capacities than our bike limitations.

Do I need to book the wineries?

Yes, it is polite to let wineries know you are coming. For small groups of 2–5 people you can usually visit without a booking, though weekends are busier and bookings are advisable. Groups of 6 or more must book ahead for a seated tutored tasting. Some wineries no longer accept groups above 16–18 people.

Are the wineries open over Christmas?

Most wineries in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels are open 7 days between 27–31 December. Christmas Eve sees many close at midday. Christmas Day all are closed by law. Boxing Day most remain closed. New Year's Day all are closed. From 2 January wineries reopen, though Monday and Tuesday openings in early January vary — check our website for current hours.

Before the Day

Do I need to make a reservation for bike hire?

For weekends, yes please. During the week you can usually turn up without a booking, but we cannot guarantee availability, so booking ahead is always recommended.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes. Please see our cancellations and refunds page on our website for full details.

Do you offer a group discount?

Our prices are competitively set for the service we provide. It takes as much effort to run a large group as a small one, so we do not currently offer group discounts.

Can I bring my own bike?

We prefer you use our bikes as we are a bike hire company, but you may bring your own if it is roadworthy. Tyre inflation is $10. Flat tyre repair is $25–$45. Other repairs are charged at $75 per hour with a one-hour minimum.

Do you have child seats?

Yes, we have one child seat for infants from 11 months old who can sit up independently, suitable for children up to 15kg.

Do you have bikes for children?

Yes. We have one child trailer for children aged 2–7, one bike for ages 7–9, and one for ages 9–11. Older children generally fit our small to medium frames. Adult bikes suit children over 14 years.

Getting there

How can I get to you?

We're at 2543 State Highway 50, Roys Hill — 15 minutes from Hastings and 25 minutes from Napier.

Most of our customers drive to us and are responsible in using a designated driver for the trip home.

Hastings Taxis (0800 875 055), Combined Taxis (06 835 7777) and Uber all service the area. Approximate prices for 2-10 people are from $70-$80 per taxi (one-way) from Hastings, $70-$80 per taxi from Havelock North Village and from $100-$110 from Napier CBD or $120 from Ahuriri/Westshore.

Ask for a mini van taxi for groups of 5-9 people. Please call the taxi companies directly for a quote and to book a time.

We do not provide transport.

Can you come and pick me up?

Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to transport people around Hawke’s Bay, there are a few other companies that do.

You’ll also find these companies charge an extra $50 per person to do so. Once you have four or more people it would be more affordable to take a mini van taxi to our location and hire bikes from us.

On the day

What is the best time to start?

Choose one of our slots: 10:30am, 11:00am, or 12:00pm in summer and 11:00am or 12:00pm in winter. Once you are here, we can get you on your way fairly quickly. You then have until 5pm to return the bikes.

How long will it take?

For winery tours, we would recommend that you make it a whole day activity. Depending on the number of wineries you visit and time spent at each winery, we estimate you will spend at least one hour per winery you visit – and time does get away from you!

Do I have to make reservations for wine tastings?

For a couple or small groups of 2–5 people you can usually visit without a booking, though weekends are busier and bookings are advisable. Groups of 6 or more must book ahead for a seated tutored tasting. Some wineries no longer accept groups above 16–18 people.

How many wineries can we visit?

Usually our customers manage to visit 3-4 wineries during the day without feeling rushed. It does depend on the time you start. The earlier you start the more you can do before 5pm.

Do I pay tasting fees at wineries?

With us, you are only paying for the bike hire.

All wineries charge about $15 – $30 per person for tasting wine. At some wineries tasting fees can be waived against any wine purchased.

Please talk to the winery directly about their policy.

How do I cycle with purchased bottle of wine?

On Yer Bike Trails & Games provides a complimentary wine collection service for its customers. Buy your wine at a cellar door before 3:00pm, and we will pick it up and have it ready for you to collect at our base between 4:00 - 5:00 PM.

Am I riding on the roads?

Not unless you want to. Since the completion of the Wineries Cycle Track in 2012 you follow the lime tracks on the side of the road for the bike winery tour. It is one of the safest places to ride and very bike friendly. There is only one section where clients are on the road for 400m.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes. Helmets are compulsory in New Zealand and client safety is paramount so we insist you take one of our helmets or bring your own. If you are stopped by the police for nor wearing a helmet, you are liable for a large fine.

Can we ride in other areas?

We only rent bikes to be used in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels Wine Districts.

Our shop is based in Bridge Pa/Roy’s Hill. This is 15km east of Hastings. From here you have a choice – depending on day – of  up to nine wineries to visit.

The coast only offers two wineries.

Havelock North only offers four wineries.

What happens if something happens to my bike?

Bike tyres don't like glass or nails. If you have a flat tyre or something breaks on the bike, roadside assistance is included with your hire. Call us and we will be there as soon as possible with a replacement.

What happens if my bike gets stolen?

We provide you with bike locks and we do encourage you use them. If the bike is stolen, the first thing to do is to contact us and we will arrange to report it to the police. When you agree to hire the bike, you agree to cover the excess for the loss, which is $500.

What happens if I have an accident?

If an accident does occur whilst you are out on one of our bike winery tours, stay calm and call 111 first if you require medical attention. Call us s

econd, we will do what we can to help you.

We highly recommend that all renters contract their own travel or personal insurance. On Yer Bike is not responsible for any type of accident as described in the rental agreement and rental waiver.

Returning your bike

What time do I have to return the bike?

All hires for our bike winery tours, regardless of what time you started, finish at 5pm. Please bring back your bicycles to our base on or before 5pm.

If you fail to do so, we reserve the right to charge you $5 per person for every half hour you are late. If this is not paid by the individual on return, we will recover it from the person who made the initial booking.

If you leave or abandon your bike at any of the wineries and do not return the bike to our base we will charge $50 per bicycle recovery fee. You will be liable for the cost of any bike(s) if stolen before we can recover it. If this is not paid by the individual on return, we will recover it from the person who made the initial booking.
