E-Bike Hire in Hawke's Bay Wine Country

Electric bike hire to visit local wineries in Napier and Hastings starts here. We're based in Roys Hill, at the edge of the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts. From the moment you hop on, you're already in wine country.

The e-bikes handle the flat terrain and the distances between wineries. What that means for you: you arrive at every cellar door feeling good, you stop as long as you like, and you still have energy for the ride home. You'll finish the day grinning, not gasping. That's what the e-bikes are for.

Why Choose Electric?

E-bikes have a small motor that assists your pedalling.  You still ride, the bike just takes the edge off. What that means in practice: you arrive at each cellar door feeling good, not spent. You cover more ground, stop more often, and still have energy for the ride home.

They're especially good for full days in wine country. The distances between wineries are short, the terrain is completely flat, and the pace is entirely yours. The e-bike just makes sure the cycling never becomes the hard part of the day.

If you haven't tried one, this is a good place to start.

Visit Hawke’s Bay’s Wineries Ride With Energy.

With an electric bike, you can cycle the Hawke's Bay Cycle Trail Wineries Ride and visit cellar doors in two of New Zealand's most awarded wine districts. Here are the two on the route:

Gimblett Gravels Wine District

Stony, free-draining soils that push the vines hard — which is why the reds here have the depth they do. The route is 15–18km and takes in some of the district's best cellar doors.

  • Trinity Hill: One of the Gravels' landmark producers. Strong on Syrah, Viognier and Port-style wines.
  • Unison Vineyard: Boutique and unhurried. The kind of place where someone will actually talk to you about what's in your glass.
  • Swift Wines: A young winery with a young winemaker. The wines are worth finding.

Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District

A broader range of styles than the Gravels — more producers, more variety. The route covers 21–27km with plenty of stops along the way.

  • Ash Ridge Winery: A good first choice spot for delightful Syrah and scenic views.
  • Paritua Winery: A celebrated producer of Bordeaux-style reds.
  • Alpha Domus: Famous for its full-bodied reds and delicate whites.
  • Abbey Winery & Brewery: If someone in your group isn't a wine drinker, this is their reward. Brewery, live music, good atmosphere.
  • Oak Estate: A bistro in the vines — stop here for lunch if you're timing it right.

You can pull stops from both routes — most riders mix and match depending on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you need to know how to ride a bike to use an electric bike?

Yes. Our e-bikes still require you to pedal, so basic cycling ability is needed. However, because the motor assists your pedalling, you don't need to be fit. If you can ride a regular bike, you'll find an electric bike even easier and more enjoyable.

How far can an electric bike go on a single charge?

Our E-bikes have 5 assist levels. Approximate range on flat terrain: Level 1 ~50km, Level 3 ~30km, Level 5 ~12km. Enough range to comfortably complete either the Gimblett Gravels or Bridge Pa wine trail routes. We recommend staying at Level 3 or below. At Level 3, you'll get around 30km of range on our flat routes, which comfortably covers either trail.

Is riding an electric bike cheating?

Not at all! You still pedal — the motor simply assists you, making the distances between wineries more manageable. E-bikes mean you arrive at each cellar door feeling good, not spent, so you can concentrate on the wine, not the cycling.

Are electric bikes safe for beginners?

Absolutely. Our e-bikes are well-maintained, easy to handle, and come with helmets and a full safety briefing before you head off. The pedal-assist feature actually makes them more stable and controlled than pushing hard on a regular bike, making them a great choice for first-timers.

What is the difference between an electric bike and a regular bike hire?

The key difference is the built-in pedal-assist motor, which takes the strain out of cycling. Electric bikes cost slightly more to hire than regular bikes, but worth it if you want to cover more ground or arrive at each cellar door with something left in the tank.

What's the largest group size you can take?

We have 13 electric bikes (3 small, 5 medium, 2 large, and 3 extra large). You can add regular bikes to your booking if you have more people. Keep in mind, groups of 7–16 must book ahead at the wineries.
