The Winemaker's Lost Journal
A treasure hunt bike ride through Hawke’s Bay Wine Country

The Winemaker's Lost Journal is a self-guided treasure hunt by bike through the vineyards of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Starting from On Yer Bike Winery Tours' base in Roys Hill, Hastings, you'll hire a bike and follow a trail of cryptic clues between three partner wineries across the Gimblett Gravels wine district. The route covers 12 km of flat cycling and takes around 3–5 hours including wine tastings and lunch. It's ideal for groups of friends, couples, hens parties, birthday groups, and corporate teams.

Treasure Hunt group searching for clues

Every great wine has a secret. Elias Thorne wrote his down.

Elias Thorne made a wine nobody has ever matched. He called it the Crimson Enigma, and he never told a soul how he made it. Every grape, every method and every blend lived in one leather journal, and the notes that mattered most he wrote in a code of his own.

Elias has died, peacefully and at a great age. When his grand-niece Beatrix cleared his cellar, she found only the journal's empty cover. Tucked inside were his code key, a hand-drawn map and a letter.

The letter names you as his last surviving heirs, to an estate nobody knew existed. The estate is the journal itself. All you have to do is find it.

Elias left very precise instructions. He also said he never set a puzzle he couldn't solve himself on a bad day, so there's no excuse.

Your route

A flat, easy ride of about 12 km on cycle trails from our Roys Hill base. Allow 3 to 5 hours at your own pace, including tastings. The game runs Thursday to Sunday, when all three wineries are open.

Elias's code tells you where to ride next. You'll visit these three cellar doors, in this order:

  • Start at On Yer Bike: 11:00 AM – 11:15 AM
  • Trinity Hill Winery: 11:23 AM – 12:23 PM (2 km / 8 min)
  • Radburnd Cellars: 12:38 PM – 1:38 PM (4.1 km / 15 min)
  • Unison Vineyard (Lunch): 1:46 PM – 3:16 PM (2 km / 8 min)
  • Ash Ridge Winery: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM (3.6 km / 14 min)
  • Return to On Yer Bike: Arrival: 4:32 PM (0.2 km / 2 min)

Tasting at each stop is up to you. Not a wine drinker? There's still a journal to find, and none of the puzzles need a single sip.

Who it’s for

  • Couples who want a day out with a bit more to it
  • Friends, birthdays and hens parties
  • Team-building (larger groups can split into rival teams)
  • Anyone who likes a puzzle, whether they’re into wine or not

Two of you is plenty, but more is always fun.

How it works

Think of it as an escape room in a vineyard. It just takes all afternoon and you’re on a bike.

  • Collect your bikes, your printed treasure map and a quick briefing from us.
  • In the first chapter you learn Elias's code, a shape for every letter, and crack his first page to find out where to ride.
  • At each winery, search for the markers Elias hid and scan them with your phone.
  • Answer the wine questions on his torn-out journal pages to earn five coded cards.
  • Mark the landmarks he points you to, then draw two straight lines across your map. Where they cross is where the journal lies.
  • Decode the cards to open his five-letter lock at the final stop.

No role-play, no costumes (unless you want to dress up), and nobody has to act in front of anyone. The game runs on your phone. Each team gets one game access, which you can use on up to two phones.

What to bring

  • A pen for marking your map
  • A charged phone
  • Comfy clothes you can ride in
  • A water bottle and sunscreen
  • A raincoat if it looks cloudy

We supply the map. Elias supplies the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the treasure hunt take?

The actual treasure hunt is probably around 2-3 hours. Most teams complete the route in around 4–5 hours, with tasting stops and lunch.

Do we need to be fit or experienced cyclists?

It does help to know how to ride a bike, but apart from that it's easy going. The route is mostly flat and easy to ride. Choose a regular bike or e-bike, and go at your own pace.

Can we do the treasure hunt if we don’t drink wine?

Absolutely — there are plenty of non-alcoholic options and scenic spots to enjoy along the way.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, bookings are required so we can prepare your clues, map, and access codes. Plus organise a schedule.

What should we bring?

Comfortable clothing, sunscreen, water, and a sense of adventure! A fully charged phone or two with mobile data - maybe a backup power pack. We also recommend checking the weather for the day and plan accordingly.

Do I have to buy wine to play?

Nope! The mystery is solved using clues found at each location. Whether you want to indulge in a full tasting flight, grab a coffee, or just hunt for the next clue and head off—it’s entirely up to you.

Is there an entry fee?

There is no entry fee to visit our partner wineries to play the game. You only pay the winery if you choose to purchase food or drinks.

How does the treasure hunt work?

You hire a bike, collect your access code, and head out on a self-guided cycling route through either the Gimblett Gravels or Bridge Pa Triangle wine districts. Your phone guides you step-by-step using QR codes, cryptic riddles, and notes left behind by the legendary winemaker Elias Thorne. Solve the puzzles, collect the clues, and figure out where the lost journal may lie.

Do I need to be tech-savvy?

Not at all. The game runs in your phone's browser — no app download needed. Just scan the link at our base, enter your details, and follow the prompts.

Can I do it at my own pace?

Yes, completely. There's no timer and no set schedule once you're out on the route. Stop for a tasting, grab lunch, soak up the views — the investigation will wait.

What happens on the day?

Head to On Yer Bike Winery Tours in Roys Hill, where we'll get you set up with your bike, helmet, route map, and access code, then send you on your way.
