An Engagement to Murder
A murder mystery bike ride through Hawke's Bay Wine Country
The fiancé has been shot at his own twilight engagement party. The police want it kept quiet. Detective Roxy Miller wants it solved, so she's calling in a favour. It's a self-guided murder mystery by bike, starting from our Roys Hill base in Hastings and riding between three cellar doors in the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts.
You're the private investigator. Everyone else is already in the story.
Alpha Domus ● Paritua Winery ● Ash Ridge Winery
The engagement is off. The case isn't.
Fletcher Strickland had the ring, the rose garden and a guest list full of people who smiled at him. Last night, at his own twilight engagement party at the Founder's Villa, one of them shot him.
More than one guest had reason to want him out of the picture. A property developer, a documentary filmmaker, a doctor, a company lawyer and a wine broker with history all had dealings with Fletcher on the last morning of his life.
You are the private investigator who has never left a case unfinished, and Detective Roxy Miller wants it solved, so she's calling in a favour. She's asked you to help retrace Fletcher's steps, one winery at a time.
Five suspects, three wineries, and one anxious detective who needs you to crack it.

Your route
A flat, easy ride of about 24 km on cycle trails from our Roys Hill base. Allow 3 to 5 hours at your own pace, including tastings. The game runs Friday to Sunday.
You'll follow Fletcher's footsteps to these three cellar doors, in this order:
- Alpha Domus Winery
- Paritua Winery
- Ash Ridge Winery
The case closes just 200 m from where you started, so the ride back is the shortest of the day.
Tasting at each stop is up to you. Not a wine drinker? There's still a murder to solve, and none of the clues need a single sip.
Who it’s for
- Couples after a day out with a bit more to it than tasting
- Friends and celebrations: birthdays, hen parties or just a day off together
- Team-building: split into rival detective teams and see who cracks it first
- Puzzle fans and anyone who loves a good whodunnit
- Non-drinkers too: tasting at each stop is up to you, and there’s still a story to solve.
Two players is plenty. Bigger groups can split into teams and see who tops the leaderboard.
How it works
Think of it as an escape room in a vineyard. It just takes all day and you’re on a bike.
Collect your bikes, your case map and a quick briefing from us.
- In the first chapter, Roxy gives you a practice grid to warm up on, then hands over the five suspect files.
- Ride to three cellar doors and find the evidence markers forensics have hidden, then scan them with your phone.
- Question the suspects and the winery staff who were working at the engagement party. Answer their wine questions to earn clue cards.
- Cross off one suspect at each stop as the evidence comes in.
- Work through the logic grid on the back of your map and name the killer.
What to bring
- A pen for marking your map
- A charged phone
- Comfy clothes you can ride in
- A water bottle and sunscreen
- Snacks for the ride
- A raincoat if it looks cloudy
We supply the map. Roxy supplies the suspects.
- Yvaine Maddox, Property Developer. Has known Fletcher for years, and did not take the engagement news well.
- Juliet Ingram, Documentary Filmmaker. Fletcher helped pay for Juliet's latest film, and had started asking where the money went.
- Alistair Langford, Doctor. Fletcher once questioned Alistair's prescriptions in front of a packed room, and Alistair has never let it go.
- Brooke Trentham, Company Lawyer. Brooke's partner, Sam, is an old friend of Fletcher's, and lately the three of them have barely spoken.
- Xanthe Ormsby, Wine Broker. Fletcher was putting together a private wine deal, and Xanthe was about to be cut out of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need to know about wine?
No. Each wine question has a hint, you can keep trying until you get it, and a confident guess works surprisingly often.
How hard is it?
Medium. Roxy's practice grid in the first chapter shows you how the logic grid works before you ride anywhere, and most tasks have a hint if you get stuck.
Will winery staff help with the puzzles?
No. Everything you need is on your phone, your suspect cards and your map. Save your questions for the tasting.
When can we play?
Friday to Sunday. You choose your start time when you book (most riders start at 11am). Allow 3 to 5 hours, and have the bikes back by 5pm.
Can we split into teams?
Yes. Larger groups can split into competing teams, each with its own game access, and compare scores on the leaderboard.
Is it suitable for children?
It's a cosy mystery, so there's no gore, and teens usually enjoy it. For younger children, our treasure hunt games are a better fit.
Already solved Drink M for Murder?
Good, because this is a different case, with different suspects and a different route.
