The Wine Broker's Last Glass
A murder mystery bike ride through Hawke's Bay Wine Country

A wine broker has been poisoned at the Vintners' Association AGM, and the local constable needs your help. It's a self-guided murder mystery by bike, starting from our Roys Hill base in Hastings and riding between three cellar doors in the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts.

You're the sleuth. Everyone else is already in the story.

Radburnd Cellars ● Unison Vineyard ● Trinity Hill

Two glasses on the table. Only one of them empty.

Ava Sinclair was the sharpest wine broker in the district, and she knew everybody's business. Yesterday afternoon, during the Local Vintners' Association AGM at Oakridge Manor, she was found poisoned in a quiet side room.

More than one guest had reason to want her gone. A sacked assistant, a smooth-talking financier, a prickly professor, a security contractor and a winemaker with history all had dealings with Ava on the last morning of her life.

You once solved the great village-fête marrow mystery, and Constable Hugo Crump has never forgotten it. He's asked you to help retrace Ava's steps, one winery at a time. Five suspects, three wineries and one very excited village constable stand between you and the truth.

The Wine Broker's Last Glass Murder Mystery

Your route

A flat, easy ride of about 12.5 km on cycle trails from our Roys Hill base. Allow 3 to 5 hours at your own pace, including tastings. The game runs Thursday to Sunday.

You'll follow Ava's footsteps to these three cellar doors, in this order:

  • Radburnd Cellars
  • Unison Vineyard
  • Trinity Hill

The case closes just 200 m from where you started, so the ride back is the shortest of the day.

Tasting at each stop is up to you. Not a wine drinker? There's still a murder to solve, and none of the clues need a single sip.

Who it’s for

  • Couples after a day out with a bit more to it than tasting
  • Friends and celebrations: birthdays, hen parties or just a day off together
  • Team-building: split into rival detective teams and see who cracks it first
  • Puzzle fans and anyone who loves a cosy whodunnit

Two players is plenty. Bigger groups can split into teams and see who tops the leaderboard.

How it works

Think of it as an escape room in a vineyard. It just takes all afternoon and you’re on a bike.

  • Collect your bikes, your case map and a quick briefing from us.
  • In the first chapter, Hugo gives you a practice grid to warm up on, then hands over the five suspect files.
  • Ride to three cellar doors and find the evidence markers forensics have hidden, then scan them with your phone.
  • Question the suspects and the winery staff who were pouring at the AGM. Answer their wine questions to earn clue cards.
  • Cross off one suspect at each stop as the evidence comes in.
  • Work through the logic grid on the back of your map and name the killer.

No role-play, no costumes (unless you want to dress up), and nobody has to act in front of anyone. The game runs on your phone. One game access per team, playable on up to two phones.

What to bring

  • A pen for marking your map
  • A charged phone
  • Comfy clothes you can ride in
  • A water bottle and sunscreen
  • A raincoat if it looks cloudy

We supply the map. We supply the suspects.

  • Conrad Greaves, personal assistant: let go by Ava after bottles went missing, and still trying to clear the name
  • Kip Ellsworth, financier: a compliment for everyone, and a valuation Ava knew too much about
  • Ulysses Northcott, professor: a wine historian who answers most questions with another question
  • Lucas Kestrel, security contractor: calm, careful, and sure Ava took the credit for the work
  • Beatrix Oakhurst, winemaker: plain-spoken, hard to rattle, and with a past she'd rather not discuss

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to know about wine?

No. The suspects and staff ask a few wine questions along the way, but each one has a hint and you can keep trying until you get it right.

How hard is it?

Medium. Hugo's practice grid in the first chapter shows you how the logic grid works before you ride anywhere, and most tasks have a hint if you get stuck.

Will winery staff help with the puzzles?

No. Everything you need is on your phone, your suspect cards and your map. Save your questions for the tasting.

When can we play?

Thursday to Sunday. Bikes are due back by 5pm.

Can we split into teams?

Yes. Larger groups can split into competing teams, each with its own game access, and compare scores on the leaderboard.

Is it suitable for children?

It's a cosy mystery, so there's no gore, and teens usually enjoy it. For younger children, The Winemaker's Lost Journal treasure hunt is a better fit.

Already solved Drink M for Murder?

Good, because this is a different case, with different suspects and a different route.
