Hire a Tandem Bike in Hawke's Bay

Tandem bike hire in Hawke's Bay wine country starts here. We're based in Roys Hill, at the edge of the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine Districts. From the moment you hop on, you're already riding through the wine districts.

One bike, two riders, shared effort. You cover the same ground as a solo rider, stop at the same cellar doors, and arrive back at base having done the whole thing together. Twice the company. Arguably twice the fun.

It's twice the fun with a Tandem

Here's why it works:

  • Two riders, one bike: Tandems are genuinely fun. There's something about sharing the effort (and the steering) that makes the day more memorable than riding separately.
  • Works for mixed abilities: One strong rider up front, one less confident rider behind. You set the pace together.
  • A talking point: Arriving at a cellar door on a tandem gets a reaction every time.

Visit the Hawke’s Bay’s Wineries Ride Together

With a tandem bike, cycle the Hawke's Bay Cycle Trail Wineries Ride and visit cellar doors in two of New Zealand's most awarded wine districts. Here are the two on the route:

Gimblett Gravels Wine District

Known for its stony, free-draining soils, Gimblett Gravels is the perfect spot for lovers of bold, full-bodied red wines. The 15-18km route takes you through some of Hawke's Bay's  best cellar doors, including:

  • Trinity Hill: One of the Gravels' landmark producers. Strong on Syrah, Viognier and Port-style wines.
  • Unison Vineyard: Boutique and unhurried. The kind of place where someone will actually talk to you about what's in your glass.
  • Swift Wines: A young winery with a young winemaker. The wines are worth finding.

Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District

A broader range of styles than the Gravels — more producers, more variety. The route covers 21–27km with plenty of stops along the way.

  • Ash Ridge Winery: Good Syrah and views to match.
  • Paritua Winery: Bordeaux-style reds done seriously.
  • Alpha Domus: Bold reds and some well-made whites. Worth the stop.
  • Abbey Winery & Brewery: If someone in your group isn't a wine drinker, this is their reward. Brewery, live music, good atmosphere.
  • Oak Estate: A bistro in the vines. Stop here for lunch if you're timing it right.

You can pull stops from both routes — most riders mix and match depending on the day.

Tandem Bicycles

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it hard to ride a tandem bike if you've never tried one before?

Tandems take a little getting used to, but they're easier than most people expect, especially on flat terrain like Hawke's Bay's wine trails. The key is communication between rider and stoker (the person in the back). We give you a full briefing before you head off, and if you find it's not for you, we can swap to single bikes depending on availability.

Do both riders need to pedal on a tandem bike?

The front rider (the pilot) steers, balances and sets the pace, while the rear rider (the stoker) pedals along. Both sets of pedals are joined with a chain. Two riders sharing the load makes it easier than it looks, and a good fit for mixed fitness levels.

Is a tandem bike good for couples?

Absolutely. It's one of the most memorable things a couple can do together. You're cycling through Hawke's Bay wine country in step with each other, stopping at three or four cellar doors along the way. A great date day or anniversary treat.

How much does it cost to hire a tandem bike?

Tandem bike hire is priced per bike (for two riders), starting from $110 on weekdays, $120 on Fridays and Sundays, and $130 on Saturdays. All prices are per bike, covering both riders. All prices include GST, helmets, a route map, and roadside assistance.

Can kids ride on a tandem bike?

Tandem bikes are a great option for a parent and a teenage child to ride together, as the rear rider simply needs to pedal along. We also have a specialised tandem for kids. See our family ride page.
