Abbey Winery and Brewery
Abbey Winery and Brewery — Wine, Craft Beer and Lunch in the Bridge Pa Triangle
Abbey Winery and Brewery (also known as Abbey Cellars or Abbey Estate) is a family-owned single-estate winery and craft brewery at 1769 Maraekakaho Road, Bridge Pa, in the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District of Hawke’s Bay. It’s the lunch stop on On Yer Bike’s Saturday rides around the Bridge Pa Triangle. You’ll find estate wine, house-brewed beer and cider, food from the kitchen, and live music on selected afternoons, all in a cellar door built to look like a gothic abbey.
Who owns Abbey Winery and Brewery?
The Haworth family. Jan and Warren Haworth had spent their working lives building houses and milking cows when they found the site in 2002: 13 hectares of red metal soils in the Bridge Pa Triangle.
Warren used his building skills to make the cellar door himself, a modern take on a French gothic abbey. He was still hammering nails at 69 to finish it. The name came from years of travel and a soft spot for old churches, cathedrals and abbeys.
It’s still a family affair. Son Dermot runs the cellar door and brews the beer and cider, and daughter Natarsha looks after sales in the lower North Island.
What wines and beers does Abbey make?
Abbey is a single-estate winery, so every wine is made from grapes grown on the property. The reds lean towards Bordeaux styles and are aged in French oak. They include Rapture Merlot, Prophet and Testament Cabernet Merlot, Eden Syrah and Obsession Petit Verdot. On the lighter side there’s a Medium-Dry Riesling, a Barrel Fermented Chardonnay and Passion Rosé.
Winemaker Amelia Riwai joined Abbey in 2011, after heading the winemaking team at Matariki Wines. If you’re riding past Alpha Domus as well, her husband Barry is the winemaker there.
The beer and cider are brewed on site by Dermot, which makes Abbey the stop for anyone in your group who’d rather have a cold beer than a glass of red.
Abbey doesn’t run formal wine tastings. Order a glass, a beer or a cider with lunch instead. Found a bottle you like? Buy it at the cellar door and we’ll carry it home for you.
Can you have lunch and see live music at Abbey Winery?
Yes. Lunch is the main reason we send riders through Abbey on Saturdays. The kitchen serves pizzas and platters, made for sharing at the outdoor tables while you rest your legs. Menus change with the season, so have a look at Abbey’s cellar door menu before you go. If you’re coming as a group, book a table.
Abbey also runs live music through the warmer months: the Summer Sessions, plus ticketed band gigs. Sets are usually in the afternoon and they fill the place up. If your ride day lines up with one, check the events calendar and book ahead.
When is Abbey open?
Abbey Winery and Brewery opens for the season on Saturday 10 October 2026. It’s open on Saturdays through spring, and over Labour Weekend (24–26 October). Summer hours may differ, so check Abbey’s website before you set off.*
Where is Abbey Winery, and is it on the On Yer Bike route?
Abbey Winery and Brewery is at 1769 Maraekakaho Road, Bridge Pa 4171, in the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District. From the On Yer Bike base at Roys Hill, it’s a 7 km ride, about 25 minutes by bike. Alpha Domus is less than a kilometre along the same road, so the two pair naturally on a Bridge Pa Triangle ride.
